WEST SCORES 21 POINTS AS THE PIRATES RUN PAST SCSU BULLDOGS, 82-76

ORANGEBURG, SC – The Hampton University Pirates, led by senior guard Rashad West’s 21 points, claimed a 82-76 victory at South Carolina State University here on Saturday. Their win kept the Pirates undefeated in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play at 4-0, 9-6 overall. The SCSU Bulldogs dropped to 1-2 in the league and 5-12 overall.
The Pirates took the tip and pretty much controlled the tempo of the game as they were up by as many as 15 points in the first half, thanks largely to 50 percent shooting from three-point range (5-of-10). West scored 11 point in the first as the y Pirates went into the half with a 44-31 lead over SCSU.
S.C. State came out the gate rolling in the second half as they cut the Pirates’ lead to just one point and held them without a field goal for the first four minutes. Hampton would score a field goal every few minutes throughout the second half for a total of 18 points. Hampton scored 20 of their 38 second half points at the charity stripe.
The Pirates shot 87 percent (20-of-23) from the free throw line and only 32 percent (8-of-25) from the field in the second half, while SCSU shot 48 percent (19-of 39) from the field.
For the game, Hampton shot 39 percent (21-of-53) from the field and 75 percent from the free throw line on the night. SCSU shot 42 percent (30-of-71) on the night and they were led by Jason Flagler, who scored game high 27 points.
Joining West in double-figure scoring were Matthew Pilgrim, who scored 16 points, and Vincent Simpson, who scored 11 points.
Hampton will travel to Winston-Salem, NC to face the Rams of Winston-Salem State on Monday, January 21 at 4:00 p.m., following the conclusion of the women’s game.
